What Twitter, IG has done to developers & users, and YouTube has done to creators, is make a huge market for alternatives. We are already 10x better.
- No advertisements
- Chronological timelines
- Federation (no silos)
- No behavioural tracking
- Developer Friendly APIs
Actually, come to think of it, I would like my social media client to be more like my email client. Completely dismembering the timeline if I choose so, sort, filter content in any which way, tag, annotate, whatever. It's my feed and I want to take it places.
Anything close to that kind of tool?
With Alexa now getting into hotels, one can imagine eventually to have to ask for a non-Alexa room along the lines of asking for a non-smoking room
Federated social media will out live giants like facebook, twitter. They might have a small user base but that means nothing, they are not run for a profit and a single node going down has little impact on the hole of the network.
And being a for purpose network, it is not left to the mercy of market valuation that has killed so many social networks in the past.
Blender Fondation are running their own Peertube instance!

I retooted the Sintel video just before this toot from the official account so you also have the account to follow it on Mastodon to get news about new videos published. (I was Art Director on Sintel in 2010). More info about the Blender Foundation and Youtube recent issues: https://www.blender.org/media-exposure/youtube-blocks-blender-videos-worldwide/

No matter which social network you're on, following a diverse group of people helps you taking a peek at the other side of your personal filter bubble.
You don't have to agree with everything and everyone, but please, at least try to listen to people and their opinions.
It will help you appreciate your own life, and may just make you a little wiser.
#PeerTube is free/libre software alternative to YouTube
-- federated (uses ActivityPub)
-- peer2peer streaming
-- currently in beta
non-profit @Framasoft is crowdfunding its development
https://www.kisskissbankbank.com/en/projects/peertube-a-free-and-federated-video-platform
this project is already usable (more than 50 instances)
and can be a game-changer.
Boost its development and give it more visibility.
The vitriol against #GDPR in various social media and news media opinion pieces is quite pleasing to see
Its absence would mean that the rules have no teeth and it will be business as usual
We all need a free alternative to YouTube!
PeerTube is a decentralized video hosting network, based on free/libre software.
PeerTube is currently in beta version, that's why @Framasoft needs your help to pave the road to version 1.0!

(Framasoft is a small french non-profit, so do not hesitate to Boost this Toot to non-french user and invite them to help us fund PeerTube v1)

the GDPR isn't even in force yet and it is already a meme, that's how you know it's an amazing law
Psst, #Fediverse dwellers. Anyone wishing to contribute?
Jason Robinson, #Socialhome developer, is calling out for help
"to make The-Federation.info more into a nice landing page for all projects. This would mean not being constrained to just following servers running the #diaspora protocol, but also including servers from #ActivityPub and #OStatus side".

anybody around here tinkering with #socialhome? not that I dont like #mastodon and friends, I just don't know much else than #python / #django and some rusty C++
various people mentioned how a brief line on mastodon on NPR radio has increased registrations
this shows you how facebook and friends have built their 2 bln user base.
all publicly funded media (and many others) routinely advertise them via share buttons, invitatios to react on their pages etc.
importantly, beyond visibility, public media also provide convenient cover for not reading the terms and conditions (extending a veil of trust)
NPR included a piece this morning on leaving Facebook, pros and cons of large networks, etc.
I'm posting because it included a snippet about Mastodon. It's short, about 1/3 to 1/2 way through, but it was there.
